Legalisation of Faroese Documents

Legalisation of Faroese Documents

If you are travelling abroad this summer and need to legalise the authenticity of Faroese documents prior to departure, we recommend that you begin the process well in advance. Some documents must also be processed by Danish authorities via Ríkisumboðið (the Danish High Commissioner in the Faroe Islands) after being legalised by the relevant Faroese authority before being considered valid in your destination country.

Document requirements
Please note that only original documents with original signatures can be legalised.
There is no strict requirement regarding the age of an original document. However, it is at the discretion of the relevant authority in each country (for example, the embassy of your destination country) whether older original documents are accepted. For this reason, it is recommended to present original documents that have been issued recently – ideally within the last three months.

Marriage Certificates
Marriage certificates issued by a Faroese church must be legalised by Almanna- og mentamálaráðið (the Ministry of Social Affairs and Culture).
Marriage certificates issued by a Faroese municipality must be legalised by Løgmálaráðið (the Ministry of Justice).
Proof of marital status issued by Umhvørvisstovan (the Faroese Environment Agency) or a municipality must be legalised by Løgmálaráðið.

Baptism and Name Certificates
Baptism and name certificates must be legalised by Almanna- og mentamálaráðið.
Certificates of name change must be legalised by Løgmálaráðið.

Police Records
Police or criminal records must be legalised by Ríkisumboðið (the Danish High Commissioner in the Faroe Islands).

Other Documents
The authenticity of other public documents must be legalised by the highest Faroese authority of the public office that issued the document.

Opening Hours
Løgmálaráðið is open on weekdays between 09:00 – 15:00. It is closed on public holidays.
Please note that legalisation services may be unavailable at times during the summer period of June through August. It is therefore advised to call ahead of your visit to ensure availability.
